BTW…April in NYC (Part 2)

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

So, I’m still living on the fumes of my April in New York City adventure.
Went to MOMA on 53rd St and saw the usual suspects – Cezanne, Picasso, Gauguin, Rothko, etc. But, then I went into a little room with the Van Gogh’s. I’ve always liked his work, but I had never seen them in [...]

BTW…NYC in April 2008

Monday, April 21st, 2008

I had a great time on my recent city visit. I set up a series of “play dates”: “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof”, “Passing Strange”, “Macbeth” and “Thurgood”. I enjoyed them all!

Macbeth

My niece, Cybel, and I loved “Macbeth” with Patrick Stewart, (a consummate theater actor, but, perhaps best know from “Star Trek: Next Generation”). [...]

This was an inspirational [...]

“August Wilson Century Cycle” * Box Set

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

All 10 of his plays together in one box! They all have intros by actors, directors, etc that have an appreciation of Mr.Wilson’s work. The plays could always be purchased separately, but now they are collected in hard cover with a nice presentation box.
In 2005, August Wilson completed the ten-play cycle:

1900s - Gem of [...]

The August Wilson Saga * March 2008

Sunday, September 2nd, 2007

I knew someone somewhere would pick up on the obvious - presenting all 10 of playwright August Wilson’s plays in order - not when written, but when the events of the plays take place.
Beginning with 1900, and covering 10 decades, all will be presented at the Kennedy Center Terrace Theater, Washington, D.C. under the guidance [...]

Suzan-Lori Parks

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

Suzan-Lori Parks is an author, award winning playwright and screenwriter. I was going to categorize her as an “over achiever”. But, that’s probably a disservice - she is just doing what she has to do. Doing what matters to her - with excellence.
She won her 2002 Pultitzer Prize for the play “Topdog/Underdog”. I saw this [...]

“Radio Golf” * Fun Play!

Wednesday, June 20th, 2007

I got a chance to see “Radio Golf” while visiting NYC a few days ago. This is the final play of August Wilson’s 10 play cycle - taking us from 1910 to the mid-1990’s. His plays address events and issues of different parts of Black life across America, particularly, Pittsburgh, PA. Some of the same [...]

“Broadway Baby”: Audra McDonald

Wednesday, June 6th, 2007

Winner of 4 Tony awards, nominated again this year for her starring roll in the musical revival, “110 in The Shade”, she is definitely a “Broadway Baby”.Like another of my favorites, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Ms McDonald can usually be found on the Broadway musical stage, they’ve worked together several times, most notably in “Ragtime”.She too [...]
