“A fantabulous cross-disciplinary event combining artist panel, game show, and reality competition. Get to know artists and their works as they compete in a brain busting quiz game, shake their money-makers as they dance with the stars, and finally, spend some quality time chatting with the lovely hosts who just happen to be members of SMoCA’s Artist Advisory Committee.”

LOCALS ONLY and PHANTOM SIGHTINGS: ART AFTER THE CHICANO MOVEMENT

Wednesday, October 21, 2009, 4pm and 7pm

Phoenix Art Museum – Whiteman Hall Central at McDowell

Admission is Free – Everyone is Welcome

A panel discussion featuring artists’ reflections on Phoenix Art Museum’s phantom sightings2two recent shows Locals Only and Phantom Sightings: Art After the Chicano Movement will be moderated by Dr. Sara Cochran, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art. This lively discussion will range from artists’ personal philosophies and aesthetic practices to broader questions of identity and the duality and richness of cultural expressions. While Phantom Sightings emphasized the work of a newer generation of Latino artists who addressed a tradition of conceptual art and urbanism that emerged during the Chicano civil rights movement of the 1960s and 1970s, Locals Only explored a diversity of artists’ voices paint, print and sculpt here in the valley.

Panel members include artists Claudio Dicochea, Annie Lopez, Martin Moreno and Hector Ruiz who represent two different generations. Additional comments will be made by April Bojorquez and Casandra Hernandez, graduate students at ASU who organized Exhibiting Ourselves: Representing Cultures in Museums and Cultural Centers, a very successful national symposium that addressed key topics of cultural representation within arts institutions. Phantom Sightings was organized by Los Angeles County Museum of Art. However, Locals Only, dealing with valley artists who are working in parallel context and thinking about complementary concerns and questions, was conceived and arranged by Phoenix Art Museum’s Dr. Sara Cochran.

SAT JULY 11TH BIRTHDAY BLOWOUT “VIVA FRIDA!” FEATURES THE PHOENIX FRIDAS CRAFT COLLECTIVE

The Valley’s most popular craft collective, The Phoenix Fridas, returns to Tempe’s Changing Hands Bookstore on Saturday July 11 from 1 to 5 p.m. for “Viva Frida!” to celebrate the birth of the world’s most renowned Mexican female painter, Frida Kahlo.

“We play! We have pain and passion.

We love to paint and we live in Phoenix.

We are the Phoenix Fridas!

Rising up from triple-digit temperatures for the sake of art and craft!”

Last year’s event drew hundreds of Frida fans to Changing Hands, 6428 S. McClintock Drive, @ Guadalupe in Tempe; (480) 730-0205.

“This year we’ve ramped up our presentation to include cooking, a silent auction and photo fun,” says Carmen Guerrero, known as “Frida Beader.” Carmen, a jewelry maker and musician, will perform. A special look at the life of the artist also is scheduled.

Participants will be able to purchase original art and crafts from members of the Phoenix Fridas, including paintings, jewelry, hand-crocheted tops plus home and fashion accessories. A silent auction to benefit a local nonprofit will feature members of the Phoenix Fridas: Kathy Murillo, Emily Costello, Anita Mabante Leach, Lucia Madrid. April Edwards and Carmen Guerrero.

The Frida Photo Frame-Up, allows store guests to “pose” as Frida for a quick snapshot. “From Palette to Plate;” features food inspired by the bright colors of the artist’s palette will be presented by Anita Leach and will be shared with the audience.

Come make a special “Make and Take” craft with Author Kathy Murillo.

“Toxic Love” is a lecture presented by visual artist April Edwards.

The afternoon will rap up with a Panel Discussion by all the Fridas on how the artist has influenced their personal lives.

The Phoenix Fridas, voted Best Art Collective by the Phoenix New Times in 2007, take their inspiration from the late Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. The group’s members each take the artist’s name to create a personal crafty moniker.

Future Arts Research Presents David Elliott Speaking at Bentley Projects,

In Praise of Impurity: Universal Values versus Geo-aesthetics in Contemporary Art

David Elliott

Starting with genetic theory, research and a consideration of pre and early history, David Elliott will examine different kinds of pictorial creativity and how influence is, and always has been, spread through art and different types of cultural interchange.

He will argue that it is only relatively recently that this “natural” state of affairs been disrupted by ideas of nationhood which unfortunately stressed the separateness and hierarchy of cultures. He believes that this has had disastrous historical effects and, in spite of recent theories of “globalization,” has continued, in a debased form, to the present. Elliott argues that now, as before, it is the normal and desirable state of one culture to beg, steal and borrow from other cultures.

This, and the fact that all culture – even one’s own – has to be acquired, means that an openness of mind and willingness to learn are the basic tools that are needed to appreciate and enjoy what is best in the contemporary cultures of the world.
