The Importance of Mirrors

Friday, September 28th, 2007

Last weekend we traveled to Vegas for a wedding and was surprised that most the people I saw looked nothing like the commercials.
What happens here, stays here.
They took it with them and I was disappointed. There were the young guys with two beers in their hands, drawing as much attention to themselves as possible, screaming [...]

Yo-Yo * That Face!

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

As Yo-Yo Ma played, Joy, Passion, Rapture, all danced across the face of this great musician as he attacked Dvorák’s Cello Concerto during the “Live From Lincoln Center” gala on PBS last week. Intense. Then, when all done, he stood, the audience is released from his hold and a beautiful smile spreads across his face. Amazing.
Ma [...]

The “Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture” is giving us a chance to see works, like the painting here, not always included in gallery or museum collections.

From the Schomburg web page:
“These works eloquently attest to the fact that African peoples, like all members of the human family, have been actively and creatively involved in [...]

“Felliniesque”

Thursday, September 20th, 2007

I was reading a movie review and the writer described the film as “Felliniesque”.  No reference to the director, for whom the term was coined, just - “Felliniesque”. I got it.
Federico Fellini (Dec. 1924 - Dec. 1976) was one of the most influential Italian writer/directors of his day.
His films were character driven, people and plots sometimes [...]

It was a Wonderful Event

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

First, thanks to all of you who came to the opening that I didn’t get the opportunity to thank personally.
There were lots of people, tons of handshakes, and paintings being sold. A Recipe for a great time.

Patti Austin * Talented, Smoooooth

Sunday, September 16th, 2007

Knew the voice, but didn’t recognize the tiny woman singing.
I was watching a TV special devoted to Ella Fitzgerald and I was listening to Patti Austin!
She lost an enormous amount of weight, but, thankfully, she didn’t lose her voice and was great as usual.  She started singing at age 4 and had both Quincy Jones [...]

"Because Only Demons think in Straight Lines"

Wednesday, September 12th, 2007

Says Joe Ray, a wonderful artist I met at the family day at the new “Tempe Center for the Arts” this past weekend. His work is lush with color and fun.
There may have been over 5 thousand people who visited on Sunday and I shook hands with a couple of hundred so my [...]

The Spy Next Door

Tuesday, September 11th, 2007

I finally got around to seeing “The Lives of Others” which I enjoyed. First as a kind of mystery and second as a foretelling of what life for us would be like if we continue down our current path. I’d like to think that this country of red white and blue would rally to protect us creative types. Looking [...]
