Suzan-Lori Parks

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

Suzan-Lori Parks is an author, award winning playwright and screenwriter. I was going to categorize her as an “over achiever”. But, that’s probably a disservice - she is just doing what she has to do. Doing what matters to her - with excellence.
She won her 2002 Pultitzer Prize for the play “Topdog/Underdog”. I saw this [...]

Peter Max * “Summer Of Love” Exhibit, Aug. 31 – Oct. 28, 2007

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

That special season of 1967 again.  This time the “Summer of Love” will be celebrated in the city where it actually took place 40 years ago, San Francisco, and with the “Pop art icon” of that era, Pete Max.
Often described as “psychedelic”, 50 of Max’s bright, colorful pieces will be on view at the de [...]

Reality TV Shows

Sunday, August 19th, 2007

Ok, ok, I admit it. I watch them - but, usually only 2: “Top Chef” & “Project Runway”.
Both of these shows were discussed recently in a “New York Magazine” article called: “The Near Fame Experience”. It was *revealed* that these shows often manufacture the “reality”. Noooooooo!
The winners don’t always win and the losers don’t [...]

How I Start

Friday, August 17th, 2007

These are all acrylic washes or glazes. Once one color is dry I glaze over with another.
I’ve added oil to the the last two (below). I personally like #5 & 6 but kept going because it’s a demo.

“Tosca”

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

I like Puccini operas - “La Boheme”, (1896) “Tosca”, (1900), “Madama Butterfly”, (1904), “Turandot”, (1924). I find his work accessible with its universal love themes, high drama and the music is just lovely.
When I was younger, I embraced “La Boheme”: boy meets girl, they sing, girl meets boy’s friends, everybody sings, everybody is cold together, [...]

More on Joy

Tuesday, August 14th, 2007

I am most likely the least positive thinking person in my family and feel sometimes overwhelmed with all the happy thoughts going around here. But it works, it does make a difference to the people you come in contact with.  Cybel’s post today on Auntie Carrie illustrates how little you need to do in order [...]

A Personal Experience, Joy in Doing What you Like

Monday, August 13th, 2007

I’ve made mention in an earlier post that I love painting heads. I experiment with colors and brush work. I start off with a vision of what I want to get down on the canvas. Sometimes I get close to what I had in mind. Often I am so far away from my original intent [...]

Playing Around and Having Fun

Sunday, August 12th, 2007

The way things work out, it can take a hell of a long time to realize that life is so much fun, when you’re having fun.

This is one in a series of small paintings I did for the Arts and Business Council of Phoenix.
