Brazilian Roots
by Cybel ~ January 25th, 2007. Filed under: Music.I love to listen to Brazilian music when I paint: Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Stan Getz etc. I just read this absolutely fascinating article in the NY Times about the origins of Brazilian music: how it was influenced by Arabic culture & how its aesthetic was passed onto American Blues. I have to get my hands on the recently released “Musica Tradicional do Norte e Nordeste 1938,†It’s a 6 CD box set of Brazilian music circa 1938.

I contacted the reporter and he wrote back that it’s not available yet in the US…..

James, thanks for letting us know. I can’t wait to finally hear the music. I wonder where it is currently released (what country) and maybe I can do a special order? If anyone knows, please share! Thanks.

Thanks Andre & Matt for your excellent research skills. Since that NY Times article, a lot of people in the US have been looking for the CD Box set. Hopefully it will be available soon. I wonder, has anyone tried going to a Virgin Mega-Store and looking in their Import section? They often have a pretty healthy import section. I’ll look tomorrow and will let everyone know what I find in NYC.
